Unfortunate Accident! 11-22-99-3-16-12

I know what your thinking if you read our blog regularly. What in the world is happening to the population at the Leflore house? It is dwindling down to only humans. I think the loss of Buster was the most hurtful of all the pets I have ever lost. Buster was more than just a dog to our family. He was a best friend. His love was totally unconditional for everyone he met.  Buster was a dog I picked up long ago at a farm in Morgan City. He was starving for food and affection when I found him. I brought him home and cleaned him up and made him part of my family.  I think there were a few interesting things about Buster.

First, Buster felt naked without a bandanna on. So Royann always had a different bandanna for each occasion or holiday. I mean the personality difference between him having a bandanna on to not having one was amazing. His true colors would come out if he had a bandanna on. He would go from old grumpy dog to a puppy jumping around full of love in an instant with a neck scarf.

Second, He never missed church until he got older. There is a church next door to our house in Morgan City. Buster was always in attendance. He sat in the front pew right next to the piano. I know it sounds crazy, but they let him in to their once a month service. I always kidded around when he got older and stopped attending that they passed the offering plate to many times to him.

Third, Buster never missed riding the paper route with his favorite friend Mary Goodnight. Each day she picked him up and if she missed him, he wasn't the same until the next day when she picked him up. He could hear her car coming and would start howling like a wolf at the moon to get her attention.

Buster was at home on Friday when I left to take care of some things in Greenwood. I almost put him in the truck with me and the kids. I wish I would have now. The Fed Ex man delivered a package to our house and Buster must have laid down under his truck while the driver was on the phone with me making sure he was at the right house and then placing the package in the house. When the driver called and asked if he was at the right house I could hear Buster howling like he always does at visitors and I knew instantly the driver was at the right house. When he asked if he was at the right house, I said you don't have to explain where you are, I can hear my dog howling. I got a call back a few minutes later from the driver. He said, "I think I just hit your dog". He said, Buster ran out out from under the truck squealing and limping when he moved the truck. I didn't think much about it because if Buster would get near a truck and if the bumper of the truck touched him he would squeal and he already had a hurt foot before this. So I thought with his hurt foot that was all it was and the truck may have just touched him. I told the driver I would be home in a little while to check on him.  I really was not scared at all of finding Buster hurt. I got back home and I found him by the lake after calling him for about ten minutes. He looked up at me and I could tell he was hurt pretty bad. His eyes said it all. I still didn't think it was the last day for my buddy though. I loaded him and the kids up and took off to Greenville to Royann's clinic. We got to the clinic and Royann knew it was bad. She put him under anesthesia to do an x-ray. He had a broken pelvis and all of his lower organs were totally out of place and not in good shape. We could do surgery on the organs, but he still may not be the same. I told Royann lets try to save him. We prepped him for surgery and his breathing became erratic and he stopped breathing a few times and we knew right then he wouldn't make it through the surgery. We stopped the surgery prep and decided broken heartily to go on and put him to sleep. It is not an easy decision to decide some one's fate you love so much, but it was the best decision for him. I said goodbye to him and he stopped breathing for good. We laid him to rest Saturday next to his buddies that have passed on before him. The driver of the Fed Ex truck must have been a pet lover his self, because he called many times throughout the day apologizing and checking on Buster. He even offered to take care of the Vet bill. I told him that was ok. I knew the Veterinarian pretty well.

I have been thinking a lot over the weekend about our family and the loss of our furry friends. I have been pretty upset with losing so many of them so fast. Losing Buster was very tough as I said before and the others were also, but God uses tough times emotionally to teach us something. So let me tell you my thoughts from over the weekend. Back in the fall, I will just say I was under a lot of stress from a few different things. I went to take care of the dogs in the morning like I do everyday. I don't remember what they did, but I said in anger "I wish I didn't have all these dogs to take care of ". It wasn't a few days later my hunting lab died. Then a couple of months later Molly and Buster are both dead. I found the answer in my statement. I asked for something and got it. The other thing is to always chew on, in my mind, what I am about to say. Don't say anything in haste you might regret saying later on.
